History:
well, it all started a long time ago (circa 2001) . . . JR was introduced by a friend to Tony. while hanging out, it came up that both were musicians. so, the inevitable 'acoustic jam' happened one day, and they saw it was good.
having lived in the worlds of angrier and heavier music already, they found themselves in a more peaceful and uplifting frame of mind, which brought them to the reggae sound.
over time, Tony and JR developed a small repertoire of reggae tunes, honed to the acoustic guitar. obviously, the next step was to plug in. enter: Larry - brought into the fold by the same friend that introduced JR and Tony.
having a full three piece band, now (Larry: drums and bkup vox, Tony: vox and bass, JR: guitar), the drunken festivities began . . .
weekly, the three could be found at the Wicker Park watering hole: Lottie's. after a sufficient amount of alchohol, the three would cross the street to Tony's coach house, where Larry's drums lived in one room, and the other equipment was setup in the living room.
quite often, random musicans, djs, and other types, would accompany the
band
(still used loosely here) and many hours of loud drunken jamming ensued. somehow, tho', the cops almost never came to visit. and thank god . . .
finally, after many moons of this, the big day came . . . and the group was asked to play at a friend's party. when asked: "what's your guys' name?", Larry quickly retorted: "
Who Shot JR?
" - and thus, a band was born.
over the next year or two, the drunken jams continued weekly, with the occasional show performed at a friend's party, here and there.
one day, it was decided that more members were needed, in order to fill out the sound, a little more; to add some more depth. after an unsuccessful search (generally by asking anyone we'd meet: "hey, wanna play with our band?") an ad was placed in the Chicago Reader.
said ad mentioned something about looking for someone that "bleeds red, yellow, and green." Enter: Dan.
in the summer of 2004, Dan brought along his guitar and trumpet and another voice, and joined a jam session. it became fairly evident straight off, that this would be the new incarnation of
Who Shot JR?
after a short few months of practice,
Who Shot JR?
played their first gig at Lottie's, where it all began . . .
since that time,
Who Shot JR?
has been playing the Chicago area . . . sparking the joints of the local music scene . . . bringing their own punk-infused brand of Reggae to cool people everywhere.
to be continued . . . ?
